The christmas singing

I am a big fan of Cindy Woodsmall so when I got the opportunity to read her latest book I jumped on it! I was a little nervous though with it being a novella because I read her trilogy's and I am always sad to see them end so I was worried how I would feel after this one ended in under 200 pages!!
I was really satisfied with the length and the story line!! As always with Cindy Woodsmall she creates these deep and meaningful characters that you just can't help falling in love with!! I especially fell head of heels in love with Gideon!! He is such a tender hearted man and I admired how he repeatedly thought of others over himself. Mattie was also great; she was a scatterbrained baker that I could totally relate to. I myself bake and decorate cakes so I understand her really well!
Like all other books by Cindy Woodsmall there is a lesson to learn; this being that the truth is always the best answer to all. Lying to someone you love, even just to protect them, can do more damage than you thought possible!! Gideon had to learn this the hard way! Not only was this a lesson of lying but also of forgiveness! While forgiveness can be hard it is what we Christians need to do!
One of my biggest issues with novellas is that they don't really get deep in to the story and you just feel short changed on the people and the story. I did not feel that way at all about The Christmas Singing. It was deep and emotional, humorous and overall charming! Overall I felt warm, cozy and satisfied with The Christmas Singing and I will be anxiously awaiting Cindy's next book!

Cliques,Hicks and ugly Sticks By K.D. McCrite

Drama, Drama, Drama.
We've been there... and done that, I'm sure.
Well, at least I did. You know, back in junior high and all.
But sometimes it's fun to read a good book with a bit of drama.
That's just what I was able to do when I read
Cliques, Hicks and Ugly Sticks
Confessions of April Grace.
Aside from the fact that I really like the name April Grace, and I really like the cover ar
I love the story (cause I'm really a country girl at heart y'all.)
April Grace is pretty much enlisted by her mother to help
stage the church play. The only thing is, April Grace has to spend much of her entire fall on this project.
That, and she is expected to spend that time with Isabel and Myra Sue
AKA- "A+ drama queens."
Myra Sue is April Grace's sister (older sister that is.)
So, it inevitably makes her "dumb," didn't you know?
When everything is going so well (get the sarcasm) April Graces learns that she is
no longer the baby in the family.
I mean really, what more can happen?
{REVIEW}
I really like this confession from April Grace...
On Doing Algebra Homework:
"I have to say, my friend and I would probably have had more fun if we'd had
our teeth extracted by the dog dentist."
I laughed so hard when I read this! I'm terrible at Algebra and find it the least bit interesting.
I really like the fun headers and transition pages for the chapters.
The book would be a great gift for a pre-teen and some teenagers.

An Amish wedding by Beth Wiseman

An Amish Wedding" is a collection of three short stories written by three different authors. A Perfect Secret is written by Kelly Long. A Perfect Match is written by Kathleen Fuller. A Perfect Plan is written by Beth Wiseman. Each story is intertwined as the same characters are found in each story.

In A Perfect Secret the reader is introduced to Rose Bender. She agrees to marry Luke Lantz who has been her best friend most of her life. He is very practical and matter-of-fact. At least Rose thinks he is. As the days progress toward their wedding she begins to wonder is she ever really knew Luke at all.

In A Perfect Match the reader is introduced to Naomi King. She owns her own bakery business, and finds herself agreeing to help her friend and employee Margaret to find a husband. When Zeke Lapp shows up in order to attend a friend's wedding, he finds himself the object of a matchmaking scheme. His ideas differ from theirs as to which girl would be best for him, and Naomi finds herself torn between helping her friend and being true to her own heart.

In A Perfect Plan the reader is introduced to Priscilla King. As she plans for her wedding everything seems to be going wrong. She has always had to have everything planned out and running smoothly. So, when things don't go as planned she begins to wonder if she is in God's will. Is she really supposed to marry Chester Lapp? Her heart says yes, but her circumstances say no.

I really enjoyed reading all three stories. A Perfect Secret had some unexpected surprises that kept me turning the pages. A Perfect Match was predictable, but an enjoyable story nonetheless. A Perfect Plan was a bit unbelievable with all the things that did go wrong. And Priscilla's character was a bit ridiculous, but I did enjoy reading the story anyway. It certainly was not as good as the other three. If you need a quick light read this would be a good book for that. I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishers through their Booksneeze blogger program in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

THE PIRATE QUEEN BY PATRICIA HICKMAN

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

The pirate Queen by Patricia hickman
Well to do and unsatisfied. These words describe Saphora Warren, the main character in The Pirate Queen. Saphora is a southern woman who, after decades of marriage, has finally decided to leave her womanizing, plastic surgeon husband Bender. After Southern Living magazine visits their home to feature it in a future issue, Saphora packs her bags and leaves for their bungalow in Oriental on the Outer Banks, hoping to make sense of her self. Just as Saphora is about to leave for Oriental, Bender arrives home and says he's dying of cancer. With this monkey wrench thrown into her plans, Saphora agrees to care for him at their bungalow. Inwardly, she wants to kick herself for being such a pushover. Their bungalow gets more and more crowded when family members arrive and townsfolk stop by to check on them. Frustrated, Saphora asks God to show her the way back to herself. The Pirate Queen is a deep character study of Saphora who, after years of fulfilling her duties as a wife and mother, fights to discover Saphora. Hickman's poignant writing style allowed me to easily slip on Saphora's distinctive view of her marriage and family. In addition, the cast of characters in this story add dimension to the novel. This story courageously deals with the often unspoken expectations of womanhood, especially as women navigate their role in the home. The Pirate Queenhad me turning the pages, wanting to see how Saphora comes to terms with her life. A great story.

Trevor is former Olympian who now teaches skiing/hiking and suriving skills to kids along with whitewater rafting and rock climbing. On the side he is a local hero who is always helping local police find the missing or injured along the mountainside. He rescues his neighbor Natalie nephew from a lion, that is how they meet.Natalie owens the art gallery next to Trevor's store.Natalie has a gift or disabilty for sculpting but doesn't come without a coast. This book reminded me a lot of the tv show Criminals Minds were you could and see things from many angles.I loved the story line the most .I had never heard about this sort of disability with before and was every fascinted with her story.the ending is unprediectable and you never knew what was going to happen next.both Trevor and Natalie were dealing with some pretty awful history and a lot of things about themselves but as this story unfolded they grew and mature in a accepting who god made them to be.I recieved this book from WaterBrook press free in exchange for my honest review.

The Crossing by Seita Jales

The Crossing is not a pretty story with a fairytale ending where everyone lives happily ever after. Actually it is a gritty, down-to-earth, real life narrative centered around a ten-year-old unsolved school bus murder and the lasting effects it has had on several witnesses and the people in their lives. Two of the students on board the bus on that fateful night experience symptoms of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Claudia Campbell experiences increasing bouts of anxiety attacks and her spending habits have gotten out of control. Police officer Casio Hightower struggles with out-of-control bursts of rage that physically harm the people he loves most. When Claudia's husband Victor, an assistant DA reopens the case in hopes of helping his wife, Casio determines to help him solve the case. As new clues come to light, secrets of the past are revealed that change everything they believed to be true. The Crossing was a new reading experience for me. Just when I thought I knew how everything would turn out, something totally unexpected and/or shocking would occur. Interspersed between present day narrative were the last thoughts of the murder victim as she lay dying. Although this did not contribute to the solving of the case, it did add extra insight to the story. The book is well written with evident thought given to the characters and their unique reactions to their shared experience with an emphasis on how faith made a difference in their circumstances. Although The Crossing is very different than the books I usually choose, I would highly recommend it for its honest and insightful look at how one event can change a life forever. Softly and tenderly

Softly and Tenderly by Sara Evans with Rachel Hauck
This book follows Jade as she wades through some of life's toughest issues. She says she feels like she's in the middle of a soap opera and I would have to agree. Some parts of the story and it's characters certainly weren't as believable as they could've been. "Jade begins to question everything she thought she knew about family, love, and motherhood", but in the end she "begins to see a future that doesn't rest on the power of her past, but in the goodness of God's tender mercies."
This book had an interesting story line that kept me guessing about what would happen next. However, I feel it focused too much on the negative and the bad things that happened and not enough on how God could be glorified through all that went on. I also feel like the story left me hanging - I finished the last chapter and was really wondering why the story was over right then. It was like my book was without the last two chapters! I appreciate the points made about forgiveness - there was forgiveness on many fronts in this book - and I think it makes you evaluate your own life to see if you, too, have secrets that need to be shared.

The Wonder of Your love by Beth Wiseman

Katie Ann meets an Amish man named Eli who is visiting Canaan for a family event. Eli is a widower who has just seen the last of his kinner marry and move out of the "haus." Now he plans to travel and experience the freedom that a man raising 6 children on his own could never have. Meeting Katie Ann puts a slight crimp in those plans and he wonders if the Lord might not have a different plan in store for him?
Katie Ann and Eli struggle to maintain their relationship as "best friends" but both must come to face the fact that they care for each other much more than just friends do, and make some difficult decisions about where to go from there.
Side stories pop up in the book, including Lucy's, Mrs. Dash's, and Danielle's. (I'm hoping to see her next Land of Canaan book focus on Danielle) My only complaint about this book is that I felt there should have been a little more information on Lucy and her outcome, and Mrs. Dash as well. We never get to hear how things turn out for either of these new mothers. While it's tempting to hate Lucy for what happened with Ivan, you have to realize that she, too, is a victim of Ivan's wandering and irresponsible ways.
Kudos to Beth Wiseman for creating a vivid and engaging community of Amish people that, unlike many other author's Amish characters, are flawed and real. I love Amish fiction, but I lose interest quickly when the author creates a "too perfect to be real" plastic Amish community. Beth's Amish people are faithful and good, yet they struggle to do the right thing and deal with painful life events, just like the rest of us!

HERMIE A COMMON CATERPILLAR by MAX LUCADO

This children's book is a Level 2 Reader book. It has easy words and sentences for the beginning reader. I reviewed the Kindle format of the book. Although the pictures are not in color on the Kindle, they are still very detailed and cute.

Hermie is not only a caterpillar, but he feels he is a fairly plain caterpillar. Hermie has a friend, Wormie, who looks like him and interacts with him in the story. In the story they meet a butterfly, an ant, a snail, and a lady bug of which Hermie & Wormie feel they all have things that make them special and wish they had those qualities, too.

Hermie and Wormie have a common friendship not only because they look alike but also because they both talk to God. God tells them each time they question him about why they are common that he is not finished with them yet.

Hermie gets tired, goes to sleep and wakes up a butterfly. He encourages, Wormie who hasn't changed yet, that God is not finished with him either. The book ends with Wormie getting tired and going to sleep, which makes for a great bedtime story.

This book would be a good discussion point for parents to talk about changes that God is doing in their child as she is growing, to discuss how everyone has special abilities and aren't really "common," and to discuss dreams their child has for when she is "all grown up."

Waiting for Morning BY Karen Kingsburg

There was a horrific jolt and the defending sound of twisting, sparking metal and shattering glass. Jenny screamed, but it was to late. The explorer took to the air like a child's toy spinning wildly and coming to rest wrapped around a telephone pole a hundred feet away." In Karen Kingsbury's Waiting For Morning, the tragedies represent life experiences. This book is interesting and heart warming. It is hard to put down.
Hannah Ryan waits for her two girls and wonderful husband to come home from a summer camping trip. It is a perfect Christian family with nothing missing or where anything could go wrong. They got in a wreck with an unstable drunk driver. Instantly, her oldest daughter and husband died. The youngest daughter lives, but goes through severe trauma. Hannah tries to convict the driver of first-degree murder. It will be the biggest charge for drunk driving in the history of California. At the same time, it just makes things insoluble between her daughter and herself when both are bewildered about the accident.
Kingsbury makes the characters very easy to understand. Hannah Ryan is portrayed as a dynamic character in direct characterization. Jenny, her daughter, a very round character, struggles with so many difficulties after the deaths of her family members. Both struggle with unspeakable feelings of sorrow and rage that fuse into one chilling purpose for living. All Hannah wants is revenge against Brian Wesley, the drunk driver that causes her all the pain. In fury of things going on, Hannah shuts the Lord out of her life, the biggest mistake of all.
It is not very difficult nor too easy to follow along with. The book's superior ways in the dialogue is extremely intelligible. Although the characters are older, the reading is not too mature for younger teens. The language is internal. It speaks to the inside of your heart. The tone can make a person change completely, or can shake them up. It is also shocking at times with a touch of thrill.
When the holidays arrive, everything becomes a lot harder for everyone. The Novel takes place in a city in the mists of California. It takes place around the time of holidays and vacations, which makes it more difficult on Jenny and Hannah.
The story, told in third person omniscient, revolves around Hannah. A couple of flashbacks take place while she remembers memories, and looks back at old pictures. The foreshadowing works greatly and proves that someone can live for something that they cannot find in themselves. "I don't need God anymore..." becomes the realistic nature of this novel. Horrible circumstances make many people question their faith.
Waiting For Morning, by Karen Kingsbury, a fantastic book on true-life experiences, keeps the reader on edge, waiting for the next sight. It can have a huge effect on a person from laughing, to crying, to smiling. It can and will leave the readers in true amazement. If people need to find themselves or find the truth in the Lord during hard battles, this book is wonderful.

Gabby God’s Little Angel

By Sheila Walsh

The book introduces us to the clumsy angel Gabby who has a new assignment. She will be the guardian angel for a little girl Sophie. Gabby and Sophie share some similar traits even though one is an angel and one is a human. Of course Sophie doesn't know Gabby is there but Gabby takes her mission very seriously. Walsh presents the story in a simple way to let little girls know that God loves us very much and even sends angels to protect us. She uses Psalm 91:11 to let girls know this concept is biblical.

The Harvest of grace

 - By Cindy Woodsmall

Harvest of Grace follows Sylvia Fisher as she recovers from a heart break and moves away from home and onto the struggling Blank family farm. When Aaron Blank returns home his only desire is to sell the farm and go into the non-electric appliance business. With Sylvia and Aaron having different reasons for wanting the farm to succeed they work side-by-side finding a deep companionship with one another. The story also visits some characters in the previous books of the Ada's House series of novels.

I will be honest, I have not been impressed by any Amish novels other than Beverly Lewis. But Cindy Woodsmall makes the Amish setting come alive once again. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will be going back and reading the Ada's House novels that came before Harvest of Grace. I quickly fell in love with Sylvia Fisher and hoped the best for her as she began to seek a new life away from home. I applauded our hero as he returned home a recovering alcoholic and truly tried to mend fences with his grieving and hurt parents. It's a story that is easy to enjoy and get caught up in and I highly recommend it.

WHEN SPARROWS FALL

       BY MEG MOSELEY

The author crafted a master story. Not only were the characters unique but I was blown away time and time again by their fresh perspective.you see the world through the character;s eyes to the point I would read a description and immediately know that yes,I have seen that, the metaphors for the setting, similes between characters.it painted a beautiful picture with the words and was one reason I couldn’t stay away from the pages.

Aside from the stand-out word painting, the storyline kept it grounded. It’s a unique setting amongst a religious cult that isn’t  really talked about-and is too in depth to go into in a short review.Let me say this there is a slight element of suspense.the details behind Miranda’s past and why it brought her to this moment kept me flipping fast with no idea what the next page held.

The children and there love coupled  with Jack’s devotion add spice to the story.Humor relives  pressure several several times and I laughed and shared lines aloud with family on more than one occasion.

There is only one word for this book.a keeper.

This book was sent to me from the publisher for my review .Thank you/

THE LIGHTHOUSE BALL

                   BY

       COLLEEN COBLE

A note from the author.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this third excision to merry falls as much as I have. I’ve learned about Halley's Comet.the first car and airplane, and what people at the turn of the last century right along with you.Such fun.

I am so thankful you were all willing to take this little sidestep with me to historical romantic mysteries.I hope it delivered my usual blend of mystery and romance while giving you a glimpse of an earlier time.

Much love

Colleen

I liked the fact that I could down load this book to my kindle. Then read when every I had time where I was.

This book is a real keeper. The story is wonderful.I liked the fact that the main character was so loyalty to her family.I liked the description of the homes and activities.secrets, friendship, mysteries, twist and turns until the very end.

One thing I liked was that the story was that a white lie of omission can affect those around you as much as you.It can ear away at ones peace of mine and those that helping keep your secret.Even when your reason for not telling the truth seems the right thing to do.

I feel Olivia was wrong for keeping her secrets from Harrison.

I received this book for review from Book Sneeze. The Opinions in this review are my on.

Plain Proposal

By BETH WISEMAN

This is a great story about Miriam and Saul.Miriam likes Saul and is hopeing he is planning to stay in the Old order Amish
Community. There is talk he is planning on leaving.he longs for the outside world and things that are forbidden in their community.Miriam knows she loves Saul and is sure he loves her.She decides she will leave with him.
Miriam Englich cousin Shelby is sent to stay the summer with the Raber family.Shelby tells
her to reconsider. all the characters involved learn lessons about each other and about themselves and Gods directions.
One important message I got out of this book is you can take your faith anywhere you go. This story has a lot of twist and turns and you have to see if they can be solved in the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Amish fiction or books about the love of their family or God.

A conversation with GOD for Women by Marcia Ford

Marcia has taken fifty-five of the most common questions women would like to ask god.She used them to discuss the way God and his way works in the world and in our lives. All of the answers to these questions are found in the bible.

I liked this book.It is thoughtful and very personal,It answers some of the hardest guestions.Such as good and evil in a
simple and easy to understand way.

The message it gets across is very strongly linked with the bible which makes it easier to relate to. The section on trusting after we've been betrayed was excellent.

This is an excellent book for new belivers in christ. The most important lesson to be learned from this book is to search thescriptures for the answers to questions you have and take time to know God and seek him out.
